Anderson Silva vs. Demian Maia - UFC 112

As far as the UFC is concerned I am a full fledged arm-chair warrior. I like the sport for the athletes it produces and the dedication put in by these fighters. I admire their discipline and work ethics in trying to become the best in their field. But once in a while something happens that really puts a damper in our view of things.

Take the recent UFC event held in Abu Dhabi with the main even being the Anderson Silva vs. Demian Maia fight with Silva being the chanmpion and Maia the challenger. From rounds 3 onwards, there was only 1 fighter in the ring. It was a weird fight to say the least with the champ dancing around the octagon and not engaging the challenger. I thought Anderson Silva was not giving the respect due to his challenger.

But the thing that really got to me was the never say die attitude of the challenger, Demian Maia. I am looking at this man in a new light. It was very obvious that he was out-gunned by the supremely lethal Anderson Silva but yet he was pushing forward trying to engage the champ and at 1 point even swinging and slugging at the champ from his knees and in the end, the challenger lost the bout on points.

BUT WHAT CAN WE TAKE AWAY FROM THIS? To me it is this : never say die, never give up and persist till the very end. In life you may lose your 'fight' (whatever that you may endeavour) but at least you know you tried your best and in the end that is all that matters.

Impromptu B'day Party at Mandarin Oriental

Today we had a simple celebration of sorts of Marcos' birthday at the Mandarin Oriental. It didn't start out as such as Richard invited us over for dinner after open mats. As we chatted along, suddenly out of nowhere a sax player showed up and the birthday song was playing and out came the birthday cake.

All in all it was a great nite out with a great bunch of guys.

2 Months of Skool

Today marks the end of 2 months of school for the girls.

Our initial fears of enrolling them in the Chinese school system have proven to be unfounded as they seem to be coping quite well with mandarin. It's actually quite cool to see them conversing in mandarin nowadays (well occasionally anyway) considering both me & the missus can't speak a word of mandarin. Hey maybe one day I might pick it up from them. Who knows.

Anyway here's a snapshot of them finishing up their homework today

Too Bad 4 Me

Yesterday I was unfortunate enough to be a victim of a petty crime.

Some mofo broke my car window and made off with my phone and iPod. I wasn't too concerned about the 2 items. Heck, easy come easy go. What pissed me off was it took me all of 7 hours to get everything repaired and fixed.

Oh well we live to fight another day then. Better luck next time.

But oh, check out this car that I saw on the road, what a cool paint job.

Long Drive. Kuantan-Segamat-Air Keroh-Kuala Lumpur

Had a 7 hour drive today. Kuantan-Segamat-Air Keroh-Kuala Lumpur. Not much fun when you drive alone. Probably did around 350-400 kilometeres all in all plus about 4 Coke Lights and a can of Nescafe Ice and consequently several stops at the rest-stops.

Here's a short clip of part of the drive from Kuantan to Segamat

And here are 2 pics of Gemas town. I think it had a total of 2 streets.

Doctor's appointment

Today I had an appointment with my physician to check me lungs. Had some difficulty breathing recently, whether it was real or imagine I do not know, hence the checkup.

It was apparently a toss-up between sleep apnea and asthma and so the good doctor proceeded to do a few tests on me and some probing. She had a look down my throat and said that the air passage didn't seem blocked. She was explaining that in some people who are overweight, there could be fats at the back of the throat that can impede the free flow of oxygen when a person breathes in. Thankfully that doesn't seem to be my problem. Remedy for the time being? : someone's gotta monitor my breathing when I sleep especially when I snore.

As for the asthma thingy, I had to inhale and exhale into this contraption. Bugger it took me several tries to get a reading. To cut a long story short, the reading on the machine indicated that there's no way in hell I have asthma. Woohoo!!

The 3rd and final hurdle. High cholesterol. The doctor gave me an option. She gave me 4 months to clean up my act and in exactly 4 months I'll have to take another blood test and if the reading's still high she'll have to prescribe drugs...uggh!!

So essentially I have 4 months to lower the cholesterol to acceptable levels failing which I get to take drugs that will essentially fuck up my kidneys and liver.

Anyway, here are some pics of the food I denied myself today

Island Glades

It's been ages since I last visited Penang and today I am here for an overnight visit. I usually stay with the in-laws at Island Glades. And down the road from the house is where you can find all the makan stalls and kopitiams. Here are some pics :

This guy has been around since the 1970s. He's got plain apam, sweetcorn apam and even sweetcorn with a whole egg apam. The latter essentially fucks up my low cholesterol meal plans

Oh well, I couldn't resist it, no trip to Penang would be complete without it's famous prawn mee. Fuck it lah, life's too short anyway...I'm diving in

Ai Vy's birthday

Tonight we had a small makan at Carnaval in Damansara Jaya to celebrate Ai Vy's 50th birthday. It was also a sort of farewell/have a safe trip party for Marcos and Anna who will be leaving for Brazil next week for their annual 'I need to get the hell out of Malaysia' holiday.

Here's a short video of grandma Ai Vy's cake blowing and some pics.

It's That Time of the Year

Christmas is fast approaching and by the look of things, shoppers are still ....what shoppers? The economy is in the doldrums and everyone's being extra careful and that's not necessarily a bad thing. Unless you are a retailer of course.

Let's hope by this time next year our PM Najib Mongolia would have fixed our so-called 'tiger' economy. I'll be keeping my fingers and toes crossed.

Aksyen Berlagak

Why is it that some Malaysians are so berlagak. I am at lunch at this vegetarian joint and I can't help but overhear the next table.

Yeah so the foreign waitress got the order wrong, instead of 8 BIG plates of whatever, she brought in 8 small plates of whatever. And then it started : it was all about ' I want to see the boss' ; 'you don't know how to speak English?' ; 'you don't know how to speak Bahasa?' ; 'I said I want to see your boss'

For fuck's sake lah, the poor girl probably has to repay some agent first to cover the cost of coming over to work before even earning a dime. And she gets this shit!

Man, I gotta get out of here before I cause grievious bodily hurt to someone.

Here's a pic of the family of assholes. If u recognise them, please tell them they were very close to ending up at SJMC....very close

The Weekly Grind

Every Friday afternoon without fail, Dawn & Grace will cry through their piano class. It seems that the theory part of the lesson is tough. I've never taken music lessons in my life, so I am kinda in the dark and consequently of not much help.

Thankfully, they enjoy the practical part of it more. It's difficult for me to see them 'suffer' through this but ultimately I hope that they will benefit from something I've never had.

Dang kids!! I am gonna tally up the costs and make them pay it all back into my retirement fund!!

It's already mid-November and I seem not to have met my 2009 financial/revenue targets yet for the office. Could it be that the world is in recession? Whatever the reason it's sure no fun to miss my self imposed target.

Well fuck you world puta recession, the year ain't over yet. I'll see you on 31.12.09 and we'll see who comes out on top!!

Effing Coppers

This is a common scene outside my apartment, fucking cops not doing their jobs and just sleeping in their patrol cars. Sometimes they will come the apartment and harass the boys working downstairs and seek bribes, their main source of income.

That's the problem isn't it, the government sweeping all these unemployables off the streets and giving them jobs irregardless of qualifications. And we wonder why the civil service sucks

Wonder no more!

Singapore Bashing

This joke is a gem. It's 230 am and I am laughing my ass off. Here goes :

It is the final round of the Miss Universe Pageant and the 3 finalists, Miss USA, Miss Malaysia and Miss Singapore were being asked 3 simple questions.

MC: The first question is name me an electrical appliance starting with the letter "L".

Miss USA: Lamp
Miss Malaysia: Light bulb
Miss Singapore: LADIO

Judge: No, no, Radio does not start with the letter "L". MC: I am going to give you 2 more chances.

The next question is name me an animal starting with the letter "L".

Miss USA: Lion
Miss Malaysia: Leopard
Miss Singapore: LABBIT

Judge: No, no, no, Rabbit does not start with the letter "L". MC: I am going to give you one last chance, if you answer this question incorrectly, you are disqualified.

Name me a fruit starting with the letter "L"

Miss USA: Lemon
Miss Malaysia: Lychee
Miss Singapore, with full of confidence, smiles and says: LIEWLIAN !!

This is not the end of the story, the Judge consulted the board of judges to determine if Miss Singapore should really disqualified and they decided that since Miss Singapore was having problems with the letter "L", the decided to give her another chance.

Judge: OK, the final question is name me a human anatomy starting with the letter "L"

Miss USA: Lung (applause)
Miss Malaysia: Liver (even more applause)
Miss Singapore: LAN JIAO

Time Flies Y'all (Blue Skies and Everything Nice)

This morning I had a chat with the Mrs and it dawned upon me that the kids will the starting their Standard 1 in 2 months time. It wasn't that long ago that the Stork brought them in, I can still remember it like it was yesterday..both of them wrapped up in their blankets and easily fitting between my palms and the crook of my elbows.

What brought about the conversation was that there were a lot of things that were still needed to be taught to the girls before they start school. Simple stuff like how to buy things with their pocket-money, how to tell time or even how not to talk to strangers. It may seem a long time ago, but I still remember these same lessons as they were taught to me by my parents some 30 plus years ago.

As usual the bulk of these 'lessons' will be handled by Sumi. I don't aknowledge it often enough but Sumi is THE PERFECT mom for the kids. I am not home during the day so I don't actually see how the kids are being guided daily but as I see how the kids have progressed so far, I know they are in perfect hands.

Good kids and a good loving wife. What more can a guy ask for? Nothing.

Shah Alam's New Civil Courts

The Shah Alam High, Sessions and Magistrate's courts have just shifted again, this time to Plaza MRCB. It wasn't too long ago that the courts shifted to the Sultan Abdul Aziz Court Complex.

The good thing about the shift is that now there are ample parking spots but the bad thing is definitely going to be missing files and documents, further excarbating the already bad situation we have come to associate Shah Alam courts with.

The new Chief Justice seems to be trying his best to improve the competency and productivity of the courts but I think like his predecessors, he will fail. He will fail because he has inherited all the same deadwood within the system which has been clogging the system. I will give him 4 stars for effort but 1 star for execution.

Anyway here are some pics of the courts, inside and out :
